“There couldn’t be a better example of art meeting nature than this retreat.”
– Gretha, participant
Two Wild & Wise Retreats held at the Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Reserve in October offered something truly exceptional: pure creativity, good food, time in nature and a connection between like-minded women – all surrounded by the beauty of renosterveld.
Led by award-winning botanical artist Willie Schlechter, the retreats were so popular that a second weekend was added shortly after the first sold out. Both October retreats drew a mix of participants, from beginners picking up a brush for the first time to experienced botanical artists like well-known naturalist Suretha Dorse.
ORT CEO Odette Curtis-Scott, who joined one of the weekends, described it as an unforgettable experience.
“I learned so much; Willie is an absolute honey. So patient with each one of us, sharing his incredible knowledge and gently guiding us. The connection that each and every one of the ladies formed was incredible. It was a super special weekend.”
Participants spent the first afternoon selecting a plant from the Haarwegskloof Reserve to illustrate, followed by immersing themselves in hours of focused, supported creativity under Willie’s expert guidance. Delicious meals by the talented Dee Robinson of Tuck Tuck ZA provided a moment’s break from the artistic sessions, adding a warm, homely touch to the weekend.
Here’s what some of the retreat participants had to say:
Gretha: “The weekend began with choosing what to draw, followed by an intense period of focus as we set out to recreate our chosen plant. Wonderful meals appeared at intervals, and our concentration continued under the guidance and care of the accomplished botanical artist, Willie Schlechter. Thank you, Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Centre, for a truly unforgettable experience.”
Willemien: “I had the most amazing weekend, filled with learning and laughter. The meals were delicious, the company and instructor exceptional, and I left Haarwegskloof recharged and inspired!”
Barbara: “I came hoping for insights into the renosterveld environment — and also to learn new art skills with Willie. All of these goals came together in the most enjoyable and productive way. Learning about watercolour techniques was unexpectedly enriching. At the same time, the other participants were delightful companions. What a privilege.”
The start of something special
The Wild & Wise Retreats have proven extremely popular events this year. Kept deliberately small and intimate, they create a safe and welcoming space for all participants – including women travelling solo – to pick up a new skill while also unwinding in renosterveld and making new friends.
“These retreats have been such a success that we’ll definitely host more of them in 2026,” says Odette. “It’s a joy to see people experience something so different and special in this peaceful setting.”
To make the experience even more accessible, retreat fees can be paid in instalments – with more info coming soon on the planned retreats for 2026.
