Caledon farmer, MG Lötter, signed the first conservation easement in Renosterveld. This signing served as the blueprint on which future conservation easements in Renosterveld were based.
MG has truly been a pioneer in Renosterveld conservation. He initially signed an easement on one property. Now, 3 years later, there are 3 servitudes on farms in the area.
What does this mean for a farmer? A servitude is attached to the title deed, which protects the land in perpetuity. A management plan is attached to the servitude. The ORCT supports landowners to implement the plan through a series of interventions, like invasive alien clearing, fire management, erosion control and more.
Here MG explains why he signed in the first place, and what has happened since then.
